How about using throwing knife damage (that's pretty close to what's being
used) with as many successes to hit as were made on the magic test. Use
those to stage up the damage. Of course, this may make it a little to
powerful, but it'll still be pretty harmless to anyone in any kind of
hardened armor, but could kill someone in just clothes.
