If they don't travel in a straight line you get a deformed picture, my
limited knowledge of sound ranging tells me. AFAIK, active sonar works by
sending out a sound pulse, measuring the time it takes for it to return to
the sender's location, and then computing the distance it has traveled. So
if your ping doesn't go in a straight line, it travels a longer distance,
leading to things like:
PC with ultrasound: "No, we won't run into any walls if we go 10 meters
forward, my goggles say it's at least 12 meters away from us" meters away
Other PCs: "You sure? It looks closer than that to me..."
PC with ultrasound: "Trust me, I know what I'm doing."
