Unless you had a held action, if the elf rolled a higher
initiative he would go first. In that case, even if you
saw him casting the spell you wouldn't be able to react
fast enough to it. And, seeing a spell cast requires a
perception test, which requires an action (looking). If he
went first and dropped your spell you might not even know
what happened if you didn't even have a chance to see him
casting the spell (maybe assuming he had a pal in the
astral that nailed you).
But, I do have some of points you can raise.
First, it's debatable as to whether or not you can ground
through a sustained spell. But that's a GM call, IMHO. So
in the game you play in it could be legal.
Second, the elf was in physical space and grounded a
spell? Would someone please correct me if I'm wrong (like
it's never been done before :) but I thought it was only
possible to ground spells from the astral plane.
Third, if the elf grounded his spell through the eye, then
that's where the spell would ground out through, hitting
the elf and the surounding area, not the mage, IMHO. But
this one's probably a GM call too.
