Nooo...the key word was 'difference' in cost.

Thus if the costs are: L-1, M-2, S-4, D-8 (and I have no idea what they
ACTUALLY are, but just go with it..)

You subtract the lower levels cost from the next level, thus:

To get to S, you would buy L for 1, M for (2-1=1), and S for (4-2=2),
which totals 4 either way you do it.
