You had me till here. Mr. Knight is indeed much more than he seems
(just look at the company he keeps) but is obviously not connected to
Artificer in any way. (again, look at the company he keeps)

I liked it overall, but I would put a slightly different spin on it.
Perhaps he (it?) is the cause of the great crash. Echo Mirage was
trying to force him out of the matrix and succeeded, almost. He's
still out there is some dark corner (perhaps in a system offline)
just waiting for someone to stumble past to help him regain his
strength.
I have other theories about the matrix that I've already voiced here,
but I like this one as well.
