Could you maybe use the gold to buy some real-estate (either in Britain
or on the continent) which could then be sold back in the states to
recoup at least a portion of the money spent? Assuming that this could be
done before leaving the UK (which may not be possible, I don't know).

Maybe you could buy some cyberterminals (the legal version of the
cyberdeck), get them rigged up for shadows when you get back and sell off
the decks on the street. Might even make some money that way. You could
buy a couple of Fairlight-level terminals and a couple of Fuchi-7
equivalents with that kind of money...
