Actually, I have allowed a character to have one in my game. (Same reason
as yours, really. (I also have an NPC with one, but his is first-generation
experimental, and causes nine kinds of problems every so often.))
He kicks a lot of ass in the kind of firefights that the PCs get into.
Mainly because the PCs get into the kind of firefights where they are the
only ones doing the shooting.
