"almost human" metahumans live out their lives in
an increasingly human world, but as the mana
level drops, the more "fantastic" beings (the ones
we haven't seen yet in SR) instinctively are
drawn to high mana areas, enter a very long
hibernation, or simply die. Dragon lairs are
high-mana areas, by definition BTW.
Imagine if a magical age (the fourth age,
anyone?) ended more suddenly than usual, with
a drastic "snap". The instinctual "you should
merge with your liferock/dig deep into the river
bottom/do whatever windlings do" warning would
come seconds before the fataly low mana
instead of years. The survivors would be very
few indeed.
