This sounds like something I saw in a movie or TV show (or maybe a book)
once. I can't remember which one, unfortunately, but I'm pretty sure I've
seen it before.

If the player is up to it, this could be some very interesting roleplaying
for everyone involved. Especially if you let the character experience one
of these memory failures when he's halfway through the adventure...
