Sounds like you have got it correct. The Mage / attack thing doesn't
happen in our campaign- spells work SO much better. But all the
mundanes have willpower jacked to 6+, and then got the bright idea of
carrieng throwing knives, so they can attack spirits without melee (or
armor for the spirit). Well, they didn't know how to throw knives, so
that was bad, so we decided that "roll willpower in place of skill"
meant willpower had to replace a skill you HAVE- you might still have
the penalty for deafulting from another skill (or quickness).

the character's willpower, my Ref has decided that even the biggest,
baddest mounted weapons would have no affect against a spirit! I tried
to appeal to him that Rigger 2 uses a form of two-way simsense that
allows a rigger to "merge" (for lack of a better term) with his vehicles
and/or weapons so that this should allow Willpower >to be used at range.

Well, it says "if the character is attacking". It unfortunately doesn't
say ANYTHING about non character attacks on spirits (except spirit VS
spiritand other astral combat).
I'd say its a matter of oppinion as to wether a rigger "in" a drone can
make such an attack, as it is "his" attack, but itis also the drones, or
even if vehicle wepons not hand aimed will work.

However, sprits ARE fully physical when manifest (but "immune" to normal
weapons). A rigger can still use suppressive fire and area effect
against tham, or do property damage to impede thier movement (dump
cielings on them, etc). The same would go for programmed drones, once
informed of the spirtis existance - as pointed out, it might not be
recognized as a threat, although "paste anything bigger than a rat that
moves trough this area" should do it. With a bigger drone or vehicle,
just ram the manifest spirit- at good speed, you will do damage, or at
least knock it around and maybe park on top of it, hidering its actions.

Another point is that exploiting a spirits "vulnerability" lets you make
normal attacks. Using a firehose (water cannon) against fire
elementals, concussion grenades or most other NON AP explosives (blast
is an elemental air effect) against earth elemtals, and flares or white
phosphorus or tracer rounds against water elemntals. Air elemantals-
HMM, maybe bullets made from unrefined minerals, like raw copper?

Nature spirits lack such weaknesses. Pity.
