Personally I don't have that much problems with that anymore, as I'm useing
a hit location-system and simply tell the players what happens (i.e. "Your
hand get's shot off", "You see a flash of light and suddenly you find
yourself in a giant white room and an old man with white clothes and a
white beard says "Welcome to heaven, son.""....though I'd say that
"Welcome to hell" is more likely with most PCs)
If they survive the fight I tell them the actual damage. Works pretty well,
though it's very much like diceless roleplaying...
