The spell still knows 'where' the target is, since the magician did,
consciously. "The guy on the left" isn't too complicated. Now, if they're
doing a shell-game routine while he's casting, say... and both look the
same in the physical as well as the astral...

Spells that go out and hunt for targets... That idea doesn't sound like it
contradicts SR's magic system to you? Sure, okay, it creates a spell
construct, similar to a barrier (maintained as long as the spell is
sustained, that is), that does certain things (e.g. Hunt and kill Elfs).
The problem, I think, is complexity. Simulating decent intelligence and
skills within the package of a spell is going to be pretty harsh on drain,
I think. This might work more as ritual magic, where the drain on the
magician(s) involved can be spread out, and more mana can be channeled into
the effect... You're basically mimicking a spirit with a spell. I recall
there being mentioned, I think in the 1st ed Grimoire, a debate in the SR
world on whether spirits were alive or merely magical constructs formatted
as magicians expected them to appear.
