Maybe, maybe not. In this case, I'd be inclined to agree, but... It all
kind of depends on whether the magician's consciousness is truly knocked
out/unconscious or just kind of pushed to the side. If it's only pulled
out of the driver's seat (so to speak) it might be possible to issue
commands to the spirit, while gaining the the extra strength that the
spirit would have.

I was hoping for maybe some ideas as to what might happen with it...
Would the guy suddenly become the puppet of the free spirit, or, since
the freebie has to obey him so long as he has control over it, would he
still have free will?

>No, he gave that up, willingly.

See my comments on the possession thing...

:) I got to wondering how a character might go about becoming immortal...
having done some checking, the first method doesn't really work, but it
has its own advantages...

I think it winds up, one way or the other, with the magician no longer
having direct control over his body... whether he still has control over
the spirit is another question. The idea of being a back-brain driver, of
sorts, doesn't seem entirely out of line...

Immunity to Age, Normal Weapons, Toxins and Pathogens, yep.

Perhaps a person in whom a free spirit has hidden its life begins to take
on aspects of the spirit's personality?
