As I understand it (and I've read many posts from all sides), it was
a class 1 screwup. CC wanted time off to pursue movie projects. JMS
said, "sure - we've done it before and we'll do it again". CC's agent
said "get that in writing". JMS said "I *can't* get that in writing -
that would have to go to Warner Bros. to decide. What I *can* do is
just write you out of the episode if you tell me you want the time
off".
There was a deadline to get the contract signed and on JMS's desk -
Friday at 5, IIRC. It wasn't there. JMS called CC and asked what
was going on. She couldn't reach her agent, but promised that the
contract would be signed and on his desk Monday morning. It wasn't.
They had to start actually writing the scripts, so they wrote her
out.
Pretty nasty business all round.
