Mailing List Logs for ShadowRN

Subject: Encounters wanted!
Date: Mon, 11 May 1998 11:06:42 +0100
After the recent Sprawl Sites thread, Cobra <wgallas@*****.fr> and I
decided we could write up a net.sourcebook with _usable_ encounters,
rather than the semi-adventures that are in Sprawl Sites. However, since
this is quite a lot of work we thought we'd try to enlist the help of the
rest of the list.

If you'd like to help out, read the explanation under Format, below, as
well as the Sample Encounter, to get an idea of the way we want to set
these things up. Then write up as many encounters are you like using the
format outlined below. You don't need to bother with encounter tables,
Cobra and I will take care of those. We plan to divide the encounters in
the following classes for the tables, so if you want your encounter to be
put into one of these classifications, let us know.

* Corporate
* Gang
* Law Enforcement
* Matrix
* Media
* Organized Crime
* Racial
* Street

Each encounter should only be a few hundred words long, about 200 to 300
is preferred. They should definitely _not_ be mini-adventures such as
those in Sprawl Sites, but should be usable instantly without the
gamemaster having to do a lot of work to set them up beforehand.

WHERE TO SEND IT

Send encounters to <wgallas@*****.fr> and/or <gurth@******.nl>, preferably
to both. If you're planning on sending us more than one encounters, we'd
appreciate it if you were to place them all in one message, clearly
separating them from each other. Naturally, in the net.book you'll be
credited for the encounters you wrote.

FORMAT

Title: a name for the encounter, that hints at what's going to occur (this
is mainly for gamemaster reference).

The Obvious: this describes what the player characters see (or hear) at the
beginning of the encounter, and thus in part what is apparently going on at
first sight. Next are three explanations for what is really going on,
allowing the gamemaster to choose which one is "true." Naturally, they can
also provide inspiration for completely different ideas.

Simple Plot: a hook for a simple adventure, or a sub-plot to the current
adventure, that starts off with the encounter.

Complex Plot: an idea for a more involved adventure or sub-plot, to which
the encounter can lead. Preferably, this should be a more involved version
of the Simple Plot.

Red Herring: some encounters are exactly what they seem: inconsequential
events. This gives a mundane explanation for the encounter, which will be
useful for gamemasters whose players think every encounter has to be
connected to the main story somehow.

Archetypes: the main characters in the encounter, with game stats or
references to archetypes or contacts (preferred) which can be used to
represent the characters.

SAMPLE ENCOUNTER

Alley Corp

The Obvious
The runners see a corp guy bleeding in a dark alley. He has an attache
case with him.

Simple Plot
The poor guy got shot while he was going home. He barely escaped the
gangers but will die here if the runners don't do anything. If they save
him, he can reward them with 500Y (that's all he has).

Complex Plot
The man is a corporate employee who tried to escape his corp. To make his
life easier, he took some stuff with him, after having arranged an
extraction with a fixer. The fixer tried to doublecross him, and the man
barely escaped but was mortally wounded. A group of runners is on his
trail as well as a corp strike/recovery team. The stuff he has with him is
hot, but not hot enough for the corp to send expert runners after him
(something like 30,000Y worth on the street).

Red Herring
The man was out for a night on the town, got drunk, and walked into some
sharp object that caused his wound. If left alone he might get robbed, but
that's about it.

Archetypes
Corp guy: use Corporate Secretary (SRII p. 205).
Fixer: use Fixer (SRII p. 207).
Shadowrunners: use five random archetypes (SRII pp. 49-64).
Corp team: three Company Men (SRII p. 204) and a Combat Mage (SRII p. 50).

These messages were posted a long time ago on a mailing list far, far away.
