Subject: Fun character concepts
Date: Sat, 16 May 1998 01:23:07 -0700
I've been doing a little brainstorming for what I want my next
character to be. (My ninja/phyasd Demosthenes is fun, but I can never
be happy with just one PC!)

Here's a few of the wackier character concepts I've come up with.
(Some of these are too offensive, or far out to ever use, but I'll
share them here.)

1) Former Saeder-Krupp Heavy Industry Welder
Since SK is the world leader in heavy industry/construction, it makes
sense that there would still be welders, or their equivalent
(plasti-crete adherance specialsts?) This fellow got fed up working on
crappy non-union jobs, and decided to make a dishonest buck for a
change.
His abilities make him a valuable asset to any team that needs someone
who can open locked doors, crack bank vaults, or other demoltion style
work. He probably packs a laser welder, and a fully stacked toolkit,
as well as a pistol of some sort. However, he's more of a non-combatant.

2) Hermetic Shaman - This one gets goofy, OK?
Basically, this is a shaman that follows the totem of the elements.
His power are identical to a standard shaman, except that the only
spirits he can summon are elementals. However these spirits follow the
rules for nature spirits (last until sunup/down, domains, etc.)
The domain of each spirit must be a place where a large concentration
of that element is found. (Earth=Natural stone/dirt, Water=Lakes,
streams, and even fountains, Air=Pretty much everywhere! :), and
Fire=open burning)
This guy really is statistically no different from a normal shaman,
but the mix of styles gives him a wacky feel.

3)Day Laborer gone bad - This is a guy so low, he can't even get a
wage-slave factory job. The best he can do is drift from crappy job to
crappy job. He's dug ditches in Denver, Toppled trees in Tir
Tairngire, and Fed furnaces in Fresno. He's sick of back-breaking
work, and hopes the Shadows hold some easy money.
There's a lot of potential here to run this character as a real patsy
for an established team. If the "new guy" has no real skills to offer,
the established runners can really use him in some dirty deeds, or
even set him up to take a fall. Could be fun to play.

4) Serial Killer/Rapist - (Sick, I know, but would make a powerful
story)
The best way to work these sickos in the game would be to make a
simple runner with some dark secrets. Maybe the team mage abuses his
control actions spell with the ladies? Maybe the samurai is good at
killing because he's had a lot of practice?
What happens when this guy becomes a vital part of the team, and the
team then finds out about his "bad habits?" What about when he
"indulges Himself" during a run? You need a tight-knit group to run
something like this, as well as a flexible GM willing to wreak some
havoc, but the effect could be powerful.

5) Psychologist - A total non-comabtant. Maybe he packs a gun on runs,
or maybe not. Either way he's unlikely to use one.
This guy works best as a prep-man. He can gain the trust of the
target, and discover secrets that enable the team to make a better run.
Better yet, if this guy has his own practice, and also uses things
like hypno-therapy, he could easily rip-off his clients, gaining
passwords culled from their psych profile, or secrets slipped out
during therapy.
For a better idea of this guy, watch a few episodes of Comedy Centrals
Dr. Katz, and imagine that the Dr. is using all this data against his
patients!

6) Mental Patient - The flip side of the shrink. This guy is not, and
never will be a runner, but his delusions and a little luck let him
convince other new runners that he's an old pro. Again, could be very
disruptive to the game if he screws his team too much. Ask the GM,
right?

7) Babysitter - Makes an excellent kidnapper! Left alone with the
children of powerful people. Can seduce the father, and extort money,
or simply explore the family safe while the folks are out. If She's
subtle, she can pull scams on the family without ever getting caught,
and then simply move on to her next victim.
The character might live inside the Renraku Arcology, and work without
ever leaving her post. Maybe she has the keys to a few backdoors she
conveniently leaves open?

Well, that's just a few.
I'd like to hear your opinions.
