Yes, magic leaves a trace. But wouldn't it just be simpler to just use
that Cleansing metamagical ability? And as of now, I don't recall there
being any need for Magical Theory (or any skill) to read and decipher an
aura or Background Count and attempt to learn from it.
Or is there something I'm missing here? I ask because I think sometimes we
define thing differently, which makes discussing certain topics (i.e.
magic) difficult at times. You know, you say potatoe, I say potato. I
suspect we talk past each other simply because we may not always share the
same basic definitions. Maybe not, don't know.
