That doesn't have anything to do with the noise a gun makes. To be
precise, the gun only makes mechanical noise: the hammer/firing pin
hitting the primer, the slide or bolt moving backward and forward, etc.
This can be _almost_ totally removed by locking the action (or by using
some kind of manual repeater weapon). If you'd build a gun with electric
priming, you could make one that's totally quiet when firing, mechanically
speaking anyway.

Then there's the noise the propellant gases make at the gun's muzzle. This
is reduced (but not taken away) by the "silencer," as I explained in my
previous post on this subject.

Finally, there's the sonic boom of supersonic ammunition that ArcLight
mentions. This, however, does not take place at the weapon, but rather in
a cone-shape behind the bullet. Only when the cone passes you do you hear
it, and as such it is rather difficult to use it to pinpoint the firer.
It's also not required to use subsonic ammo with a sound suppresser; if
you want the whole business of firing to be as quiet as possible, you'd do
well to use subsonic rounds, sure, but if all you care about is the firer
not being spotted, just a suppresser will do well enough.
