It seems to me that this is probably something along the lines of AD&D
specialist mages, who get an extra spell from their area of speciality:
characters who _only_ learn to cast spells (sorcery ad^H^H^H^Hers) can
devote more time to learning spells than those who also learn how to
summon spirits and enchant foci. In that light it makes sense to me,
anyway...
