You might want to try simple denim - it's tough, flexible, easy to
work with (ie no worries about heat-sealing edges and so forth) and
cheap. For the drawstring, I'd probably go for either cotton (again,
soft and flexible) or, if you want more strength, you could check out
a mountaineering/outdoor sports store (I love MEC) and find some
lightweight climbing/utility rope, it's pretty thin...
