But the world of Shadowrun is sooo different from the current world.
There would be a lot of opportunities for interesting stuff in SR...for
instance,
SR is a much more vicious place than today's world...who's to say the Dead
would take over? It might be a case of a stalemate...certain areas are
lost to
the Dead, with others being fortified by corps and/or govts. Frankly, I don't
think the sixth world would go down so easily.
And, the Dead wouldn't be the only enemies to deal with, nosiree. The
runners would have to interact with others who are capitalizing on the loss
of law and order caused by the "invasion." Plus, maybe this is just the break
the Horrors have been waiting for (mwahahaha).
All in all, there's plenty of ways to keep the despair-filled, apocalyptic
feeling, and still make it fun. Of course, you eliminate the use of future
SR supplements that are in the vein of Shutdown: Renraku Arcology (unless
the arcology was a safe place from the Dead, then it mysteriously shut
down...
You might also try running that campaign, and a normal SR campaign at
the same time (alternating, of course). That might keep the players from
getting bored with the Dead thing.
