I would say that the source code isn't needed, just the proper
equipment and software. I personally have two cd-roms that are direct
copies of the originals, made with a cd writer using a direct copy
method. Having the source code would allow for tweaking but isn't IMO
necessary for a simple copy. Of course there still may be a problem
if the original chip includes anti-tamper/anti-copy measures.
