If the coding is put on the casing, this can make for some fun with
the forensics team later on if the runners leave any spend casings
laying about.

"Detective, I've found a 9mm casing, and from the looks of the
smartgun coding on the side, I'd say they were firing armor-piercing.
We'll probably find the slug on the other side of that wall somewhere
in the next room."

If you want to use the casings over again, for several different types
of ammo, perhaps the code can be in the form of a thin foil sticker
that can be afixed and peeled off of a round. Stickers would be a
little tricky though, as the heat of firing would tend to ruin most
adhesives. If a sticker peeled off during cartidge ejection, it could
lead to a nasty, hard to clean jam.

Then there's the question of caseless. Some people on the list have
suggested that SR's caseless rounds could have a very thin aluminum
case that vaporizes when the round is fired. If they do, it wouldn't
be too hard to include a round label on the "case" of a caseless
round.
