Actually, you have it slightly backwards. The idea that sparked
the question about conversion is this: run the 6th world forward a
millenium, or dump Shadowrun into Battletech. According to the
Mayan calander (AFAIK) each world lasts for a couple thousand
years, so it could work.
The Houses were started by corporate and/or goverment
cambines, with one family or group of families eventually gaining
control of the various territories. Very little rewriting is needed to be
done to the history, so we can leave Kerensky and the Star League
and the Sucssesion (sp) Wars in place.
Most Mechwarriors (and all aerospace/dropship/jumpship pilots)
are riggers. Cyber is still being made (it's on par with 2055), but old
Star League cyber can still be had (equivelent of the 2055 delta-
grade, but not operator specific- imagaine not only inheriting the
family 'mech, but the cyberware that goes with it!). Nuerohelmets
are also being used, mostly for mages who are Warriors as well
(treat them like really ineffective and expensive rigger 'ware). The
metahumans still exist. Mages and Shamans (with some new
totems, or new manifestations for the same spirits) still exist, but they
get Stunned by an FTL jump.
Stats wise, most gear remains much the same from 2055 (most
tech degenerated that much), but some more advanced gear exists
(ie, portable lasers, jump packs, etc) for a more advanced price. I'd
use the availability of mechs and fighters (I really liked Aerotech) as
an additional priority.
Fpr the Clans, I personally don't like them. (3025 offers plenty
of room to run.) However, I can see the metaraces being a part of
the Clans, or even whole Clans made up just of a certain Race. (Or
not, if Kerensky was a racist.) Trolls make natural Elementals.
For the Mechs, my plan is to base Body off of the total amount
of IS, Armour off the total amount of armour, and just convert the
weapons. I'd boost the size of a hex to 100m for the purposes of the
range conversion. I'd figure the MG to be an minigun or an
automatic greande launcher (I'm not sure which yet). My biggest
difficulty is converting weapons damage, and I wanted to see how
other people managed it. I would like the weapons to be not quite as
impressive as they are in BT, but none of my ideas have seen the
buisness end of playtesting yet.

Oh, Gurth, I would never send runners w/o mechs against
mechs. They might see them, but only as "herding" device, kind of
like tanks and cybergrunts in heavy military armour. Still, I can see
REALLY, REALLY succesfull merc/runner units having a small
jumpship, a dropship or two (say a small civy cargo-dropper and
battered Leopard), and some mechs available. Once you know the
op, it is your choice to use or not use the mechs.
