Hmmm here in Australia a chip is many things and none ;)
when someone says "chip" they can mean -
1. A potato chip, as in the fried in oil variety you get from Mcdonalds
2. A potato chip, as in the variety you get in packets with flavourings
ala the Smiths Potato Chips or the Pringles variety.
It all depends on context, and what the person talking has in his/her hand
at the time ;)
