In my not so very humble at all opinion, I think the guide can move beyond
being 'merely' for newbies; sure, there is a lot to cover for new-players,
but what about intermediate players, and people who want to do some more
'advanced' gaming? Many of what is likely to be written could be expanded
upon so after people have played SR for a few years, they can reach for the
collective wisdom of ShadowCreations to transcend their current ability.
Yeah, transrunnerism.

>1. Timeline [TIME]

Yes, a timeline would be useful for most people, and not just newbies.

>2. Character Generation [CG]

As was pointed out in a later post, covering 'character' issues would be a
good thing. Y'know, making realistic characters, character histories, etc.
etc. Examples of 'standard' characters would be a good thing. I could make
a jibe at PrimeRunners now, but I won't.

>3. Rules Clarifications [RULES]

The index of the House Rules plasticwarriors net.book would be a 'Good
Thing' to be included here, I believe. Getting permission from Gurth first,
of course.

However, this particular area is going to be full of controversy and
confusing for most Newbies. Which Clarification is the best Clarification?
Which is why I think net.book compilations are a necessity.

>4. Roleplaying Guideline [RP]

>5. Product Info [INFO]

Hmm. How about a list of 'core books' that newbies should own? As well as
reviews of all the other sourcebooks?

>What else needs to be covered for newbies?

6. Shadowrun Resources on the Internet [SRRI]

Much like product info, but covering whats available on the 'net...
mentioning a few of the bigger sites useful to newbies, as well as IRC
channels and mailing lists.

> I think a section on GM'ing (Pacing a campaign, being fair, etc) is a must.

Hmm. GM'ing requires more than a section, as it is just as vital to the
game as are players. Stuff liek 'What Makes a Good Run' kinda thing.

As I mentioned above, advanced and intermediate kinda articles could be
written. In other words, stuff that is isn't purely for Newbies, but is
useful for everyone else - and is about Shadowrun rather than for
Shadowrun. While there are likely resources existing for this, I still
think it is an area ripe for pillage.

An 'Evil Gamesmastering Guide' would be a good example. Evil GM'ing isn't
about being a bastard, its about putting characters in difficult ethical
situations and the like. I'm sure the EGMs on the list would be happy to
fill out this area.

Playing Shadowrun dicelessly could be another article... In other words,
accepting everything regardless if its not only for newbies, or in fact
useless for newbies. :-)

How about a 'How to Keep Game Groups Together' and the like. ;-)

The other thing, to do is I thinkproduce a "Quick'n'dirty Guide to S"R
net.book as soon as possible. Covering the basics not necessarily covered
by FASA - I can't think of any examples, but I'm sure there are areas that
need to be covered. This would be the introductory type deal Newbies woudl
download when they've first bought Shadowrun, they would then later be able
to download the other net.books as well as prusue the entire archive.
Cause, face it, for a newbie dealing with something that will be as free
wheelingly chaotic as ShadowCreations will be difficult to say the least.
Witness Linux [What goes where now?].

[shrug]

I'm tired. I know I had more ideas, but thats not a suprise, I'm full of 'em.
