Actually, even under SR3, unless your armour is hardened (Gel-pak or
mil-spec) the aforementioned Armour Jacket or any heavier armour simply
reduces the resistance test Target Number to 2. A 2D attack is not
something to be laughed at - unless, of course, you've got a Body of 17 (or
something equally as ridiculous).
Also note that the Viper's Damage Code is not staged up against targets
wearing -any- kind of armour or with any level of Dermal Plating (and I
suppose Dermal Sheathing and Orthoskin). Wearing Synth Leathers may only
give you an Impact Armour rating of 1, but it drops that nasty 12D attack
to 10S. Not exactly trivial damage, but hey, it's better than having to
resist 12D, right?
