Care to read the question again, Rat? ;)

Two guns: One a Viper (firing flechette, natch), the other a standard light
pistol, also loaded with flechette.

How come the Viper shoots further? And coincidentally shoots the same
distance as a heavy pistol loaded with flechette?

An answer is that the Viper is a heavy pistol, that just happens to weigh
the same as a light pistol. And it gets away with it because it fires
flechette rounds. This is supported by the fact that the Viper is located in
the Heavy Pistol section of the tables. (Oh, and it's not a machine pistol,
anymore than the Ruger Thunderbolt is a machine pistol. Machine pistols have
a greater ammo capacity)

And again, I'd like to think FASA can get it right in at least two tries.
