Personally, I think the question is what does the spirit WANT to look
like. With a free spirit, I would argue that the astral form looks like
the free spirit wants it to - a spirit has a fair amount of ability in the
astral, after all. With a bound spirit, I think the way the mage expects
it to look on the astral would be the controlling factor. Thus, while the
mage's spirit might be a ectoplasmic blob, the shaman might create an
animorphic spirit or a walking pile of trash.
