My understanding is that is only part of it. The "G" in the
german disignation of "MG" stands for "Gwehr", which I've seen
translated as both "gun" and "rifle", usually the later.
"MG" means
"Maschinengwehr", or "automatic rifle", or an automatic firearm
firing rifle ammunition.
"Maschinenpistole", or MP, refeers in part to the liniage of the
designs, but also the round the firearm chambers (pistol-caliber
round, oddballs like the FN P-90 exucluded).
At least this grunt's understanding of it.
