Subject: Memory cost?
Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 17:49:47 -0600
:Having decided to buy a rating 6 Sorcery library, I looked though the
:rules to determine its cost. No problem 36,000 NY, however at this point
:the GM asked what media I wanted it on. I said optical chip and the GM
:quoted 72,000 NY for the memory...
:We both found this ludicrous. In Real Life (tm) the cost of a CD is
:pennies; the data/software on it is what costs. So the question was how
:much does data storage media cost in 2060?

Not much- others have given the cost. You might also get a hermetic
library as a Datasoft, at regular datasof prices.
The question is, how do you view it? Even if its on a free CD, you
need a display unit that has enough memory to hold the library- that is
where you end up paying for computer memory.

:Unfortunitely, SR3 doesn't seem to address this issue directly, although
:a 'standard 1000MP data cartridge' is mentioned in passing. I suggest a
:cost for blank data cartridges of perhaps 50NY. The writer could cost
:500NY or be standard issue with any tabletop.

Thats exactly the problem- the writter / reader may come free with
other equipment, but you need a Tabletop comp that has 3600mp of memory,
to browse through the sucker, making cross refrences, opening multiple
windows, etc.
With hard copy, you can just find all the books you need, and spread
them out in front of you...

At least, thats how I see it.

I don't think many starting mages will have rating 6 libraries in Sr3.
