"Gewehr" to be precise; "Gwehr" sounds more like a disease or
something
painful :)

"Longarm" would be the best translation, I think. (IIRC it's applied to
both rifled and smoothbore longarms -- or at least the Dutch "geweer" is,
which is much the same word).

Note entirely true, as by that reasoning the G3 rifle should be called
MG3. An automatic weapon for supporting fire is called Maschinengewehr
(literally "machine rifle," as Paul Adam already mentioned) in German, IOW
the same kind of weapon that's called "machinegun" in English.
