I'm no chemist, but I seem to remember that most explosives get their energy
from nitrogen double-bonded to oxygen. This is an unstable bond that stores
lots of energy. When the bond breaks, energy is released.

The key to explosive chemistry is making sure the bonds only break when you
want them to. It seems to me that such a reaction doesn't involve combustion
at all, necessarily.
