Yes, but someone making noise on the other side of a wall may not
be heard (especially if the wall is adequately insulated). Does that then
mean that astral perception works like hearing, and that astral perception
is centered in the ears?
In essence, your analogy is flawed. To say that astral perception
is "like" any other sense is to fundamentally fail to grasp what it means
to have an entirely new, entirely unique, entirely *different* sensory
experience.

Part of the problem with this entire thread is that some people
are open to the idea of a new sense that has no existing analog, whereas
others consistently try to draw parallels to existing senses. Neither
viewpoint is ultimately right or wrong, but they aren't necessarily
compatible. They also have different ramifications on how you interpret
the way the sense functions in terms of the game. Is it the hood that
keeps the mage from casting the spell, or is it the white noise? Can a
mage perceive astrally and see normally at the same time? These are
questions that are going to vary from one interpretation to the next.
I know what I think. It is consistent (both internally and with
the published rules), believable, and straightforward. I won't question
whether or not someone else's interpretation is "right" or "wrong",
but I
do think that issues of "consistent" and "inconsistent" are worth
discussing. Then again, some people don't give a rat's ass about
consistency, and will simply take the easiest solution. That's fine too,
and if your players are happy with that, more power to ya.

In short, to each his own.
