The key is to throw some realism in here and light a fire under their pants, so to speak.
If you've just had a firefight why would you want to take the time out to loot a corpse?
It takes time to do so and during that time, more guards could be preparing to surround
the PCs or a SWAT team could be on the way. Also, that stuff gets heavy after awhile.
Encumbrance exists in SR. Make them use the rules for it.

Also, just think what it does to your rep to find out you're a lowly street thief. I
mean, why would a real runner need to steal a pistol or a set of armor? Another point:
you never know where that gun you looted has been. What if it could be traced back to a
murder recently? That could be very bad...

And as someone else already said, make them roleplay all the fencing transactions when
they sell this stuff. Without knowing its history, they'll get a low return. After
awhile, they'll get bored with working so hard to get a little spending cash and put their
efforts where they should be - legworking for the next run.
