Which I would have mentioned, except I didn't want to make it a
spoiler.

Actually, I think it was a special kind of laser designator - but I
could be wrong. It's been a while since I've read it. GreyWolf's only
just finished it though (being one of the books he borrowed from me -
I'm going to have to start charging rent :) ) and I believe he said it
was a laser.

As I recall, the conversation went something like this...

The Russian sergeant is holding a big gun and squeezes the trigger. A
beam of light (IIRC) shoots out and hits Alamais on the stomach...

Alamais' expression was disappointed. "And what's that supposed to do?"

"Aim."

Huge explosion.

'Kay?

*Doc' points excitedly. "Ooooh! Look! K made a new word!!"*
