Well, that is the most depressing thing I've ever heard in my life (okay,
second most depressing). In all my gaming sessions I've never had a liquid
spill-out that touched the BBB. Then again, we drink out of the 12 oz. cans.
And the other sourcebooks are kept within reach off-table. So really with
your hardback even in the case of a spill you'd only get the hardcover wet,
and that can be wiped off. And screw the notebooks, say I! :-)
Seriously, I have never like the collector's idea that here is some
really cool item and let's put it up on a shelf to kept it pristine. Out of
all my books for SR my most treasured is the nearly destroyed softcover SR1,
and I think if it was still mint I wouldn't love it half as much. The
hardbacks are excellent so you don't have pages falling out, but keeping them
as some sort of trophy seems wrong. It's your hardcover though, you bought
it and no one should be able to tell you how to use it, but having it
consigned to such a dreary existence is truly depressing.
