This one is not very relevant to the history of insect spirits in SR,
IMHO. All it does is have one comment, which you mentioned, and that's it.

"Worlds Without End" is the novel you're thinking about.

I never said they appeared in 2011, I said they appeared sometime between
2011 and the time they were first spotted, around 2051. In the absence of
any more concrete information, that's the best we can do -- it's like a
murder: the time of death is somewhere between the time the person was
last seen alive, and the time the body was found.
