Actually, the Metagene *HAS* been identified in SR times (at least, according
to Shadowtech). However, the "Mage Gene" has not. It is this fact that has
allowed for replacement/clonal tissues to be done for all sub-genus
categories of Humanity.
In Changeling, what was being desired was the "Retro Gene", a trigger that
would do more than just recognize who was about to become what.

That would all depend on the character background that was developed of
