Cherokee currently live in the Appalachians (there's a reservation
and now a casino near Asheville). Those are the descendants of those that
refused to be pushed to the Midwest. After years of failing to get them
to leave the Government finally conceded their right to stay there. Now
some did move on to the Midwest but have been disowned by those that
stayed behind.
Using that history it was easy for me to fill in the gaps in the
Shadowrun world. The Cherokee in the Midwest by Shadowrun times have been
absorbed into the other tribes (real easy to justify with the game
background). The Cherokee in the Appalachians refused to be moved to the
concentrations camps and once again turned to guerrilla tactics to stay
there. History ended up repeating itself as the CAS had to accept that
the Cherokee weren't going anywhere. There status as a nation is still in
word only but thanks to a young dragon holing up in the Biltmore forming
somewhat of a symbiotic relationship with them the government currently
won't take any actions against them. The Appalachians also experienced a
lot of rapid forest regrowth after the awakening so a lot of the non
Indian population has been concentrated into the larger cities there
(primarily Asheville). Most of this lush wilderness is now considered
Cherokee territory and most travelers will not stray form the major roads
and city fares for this reason.

Ancient cultures believed that names held great power, personal names
more so and they were guarded very closely. To protect themselves, they
answered to another name, because if another discovered their real name,
it could be used against them.
History repeats itself.
