Earthdawn was the Fourth World, current is the Fifth, Shadowrun is the Sixth.
Earthdawn was effectively a prequel to Shadowrun. It is the rumored magical
past of Shadowrun, often discussed by dragons and IEs and hinted at again and
again. The insect spirits were not a central part of ED, they appeared
before the Scourge occured and thus hundreds of years before the ED timeline.
Harlequin calls them the Invae in HB, which I assume is their ED name. The
Horrors are not insect spirits, they are extra-dimensional demons from
metaplanes so far removed it takes thousands of years for the magic level to
rise high enough for them to cross over.
