I know the reason myself and my group couldn't stand Windlings was because we
had all come over to it from SR. You get set into a kind of
fantasy/cyberpunk universe where metas are a real part of everyday life, but
you never realize how fragile that balloon of suspend-disbelief is until you
get it burst suddenly and horribly by a fraggin' Windling. I tried to
introduce one into my first ED campaign and my players (all SR vets who had
been with the system since 89) burst out laughing. I seriously could not get
them to stop until I nixed the Windling. It's just such a staple of fantasy
tripe that it ruins things for players (or at least these players) who see it
without the grounding of SR's high technology to keep things balanced.
Oddly, the players loved the T'skrang though.
