I remember a concept similiar to what you're talking about mentioned in they
Cyberpunk supplement for GURPS (I'm new here, hence I don't know what the
popular consensus is on GURPS, so if it's generally hated, don't beat me with
a spoon just yet; my first exposure to the Cyberpunk genre RPG-wise was
through GURPS)...Basically they described a level of technology in which it
would be possible to store a person's personality (including memories, etc.)
on digital media--such a disk containing a person's personality was called it
a 'braintape', and could be used to transfer that personality into a new
clone body (full cloning was considered a part of this level of technology as
well). I believe that a person who had been plugged into a braintape, or
had the contents of one transferred into them was called a ghostcomp--I
remember the word, but not quite what it meant. Hope that helps.
