Subject: How exactly does a real SIN work?

Greetings & Salutations,

I've been reading the illegal SIN thread and looking through my books
on any SIN info I can get my hands on. However I am still a bit
confused as to exactly how the thing works.

Most shadowrunners don't have an authentic SIN. Metahumans can't get
one unless the government makes an exception for them. So who does
start with one. What are the qualifications one has to meet to get one
in the first place?

What information do they have on file exactly. Your SIN keeps track of
monetary transfers? Your SIN keeps track of your Criminal Record? Your
Medical History? Your taxes? Your marital status? Your work history?
All of the above and a score of other things!?

Who has the authority to issue a SIN? Every government? Every Corp?
Prisons? Who else?

Do they all use the same standards for SIN's or does each keep track of
them differently/Independently?)

What "format" do they come in? My Social Security is formatted all in
numbers in a "xxx-xx-xxxx" fashion.

Where do you store a SIN exactly?

As you can see I have a lot of questions/concerns about SIN's. Any help
would be appreciated. I would very much like to have a better grasp of
this part of the game before I get my campaign underway.

I also have some questions about credsticks. How are certified
credsticks different then the one you carry with your ID, SIN, and
banking info in it?

*sigh*,
