Old name comes from old gun. Although they may be old, and there may be
many more advanced design, very few weapons from WWII can be called
"archaic" or "obsolete".

Well, if one had to be totally technical, one could argue that since the
Minimi is a belt-fed (primarily) weapon, it isn't a rifle. Which just
throws more mud into this.
