Yes, but that's not the same as mixing ammo the way IronRaven asked about.
What you mean is alternating ammo in such a way as to fit in well with the
game mechanics. I'll grant you that that is probably the best way of doing
it, though, as it won't cause all kinds of complications. The down side is
that you are effectively stuck firing X-round bursts all the time.
