Another good source for character pics is "Faces," which is
designed for law-enforcement folks to make composite pictures.
It comes with thousands of different facial features that you
can combine. http://www.facesinterquest.com/

I haven't bought this yet, but DeckerM (who found it and told
me about it) has and has used it to generate pictures of some
of her characters (see results at:

the characters are at the top, and each has a pic.) While I'm
at it, I'll plug the story the pics support, too--it's excellent.

Unfortunately Faces isn't much good for metas without serious
Photoshopping, but I guess that's true of anything. :)
