The important thing here is not what the GM (i.e. you) think it should
do, but what the player thinks it should do. MitS states this and I
don't enough emphasis has been placed on it in this thread. The player
is the one who ultimately needs to make the compromises and sacrifices
between power and drain while still being happy with the results.
Lightsaber could mean many things.

1. Does he just want a sword that has some elemental effects? That's
easily accomplished and not too powerful?

2. Does he want his Sorcery or the Force boost up its or his ability? Be
very careful with this. A spell rarely increases the abilities of
someone but creates an effect. I would deifnite require Edged Weapons
skill and probably would not allow the spell boost his ability much.
Jedi aren't born using a lightsaber, it takes years of training.

I think the player's initial request is going to be for something too
powerful. Sorcery adding to Edged Weapons and a weapon that can cut
through steel even though the weilder has a Strength 3. Remember (and
remind the player) that although the Jedi idea is cool, you are playing
Shadowrun and so not everything is going to be mimiced exactly. But have
him design the spell with your help, not the other way around.

Life is like a Wankel Engine. In between the emptiness of boredom and
despair, and the compression of stress in one's life, there's that one
spark of enjoyment that keeps you going.
