I think the appearance/effect is what is important here and the only way
to really do it justice is to use a spell to build the weapon. Honestly,
if it were a physical weapon the feel just wouldn't be right. The damage
on a physical weapon is based on strength, whereas the damage on a
lightsaber is based more on the power of the weapon. It's kinda like the
monofilament whip in this respect.
Now there's an idea. How about making the lightsaber essentially a
monofilament whip that extends from the handle via a modified telekinesis
spell? Perhaps you can use that elemental sound bit that someone mentioned
earlier and throw in the humming and light generation as a side effect?
It's an idea anyways.
