Essentially, what you have to do is give the Shadowrun universe a
divergent history from our own, starting in 1989. There are going to
be so many inconsistencies that will be cropping up in the coming
years, that trying to resolve them all is going to a Sisyphus-like
challenge.
Ocasionally, FASA has tried to go back and use Retroactive Continuity
to fix events in the Shadowrun timeline that became too divergent
with the Real-Life timeline (for example, the changes in the "And So
it Came to Pass" chapters between SR1 and SR2 that had to be added
because of the end of the Cold War), but they can only do this to a
certain point. There are just too many of these references for them
all to be corrected. Just the other day, when I was skimming through
the London Sourcebook, I came across several references to Queen
Diana. I wouldn't worry too much about any liberties you have to take
with the timeline to make your view of Shadowrun work.
